Inspired by a European “condo-tel” concept—the brainchild of the former world-cup-ski-racing client—the innovative Alpine Haus Annex consists of a complex program—12 short-term residential units, accompanying parking, common space, rooftop gardens, and ski storage—that cleverly fits into a narrow, downtown Jackson lot. To maximize exposure to creek and mountain views equally in all 12 units, the design features individual roof gardens as well as a common rooftop deck. Parking is tucked underneath the structure, elevating residential units and further optimizing the enjoyment of vistas.
Formally, the structure builds off a series of concrete arches that serve to delineate units as well as break up visual mass. The earthbound thrust of the arches is contrasted by an upturned butterfly roof designed to control snowmelt and runoff through an internal drainage system. Each unit is accessed from a suspended outdoor walkway that runs across an undulating elevation. Cedar infill complements concrete structural members while providing variety and contrast.
