From the onset, the Parker Residence remodel presented two potentially divergent goals: to transform a 1980s bachelor pad into a comfortable family home and to retain all that the client loved about the original structure. To achieve both ends, Ward + Blake referenced the forms and character defining features of the original design as a vocabulary for new work while integrating their own voice into the project.

The 4,549-square- foot 1980s residence received a complete interior overhaul and master suite addition plus garage and mother-in-law suite. In order to retain architectural integrity in the original structure, Ward + Blake designed a complementary structure connected to the main residence by an outdoor staircase and deck to exemplify the old-new synthesis. Housing the garage and mother-in-law apartment, the new structure pairs architectural elements from the original structure – the distinctive protruding rafters – with a modern element – the butterfly roof. The master suite addition to the main structure offers fewer external clues to the Ward + Blake contribution, seamlessly extending the original roofline. Inside the home, which is nestled into a steeply sloped site, a simple and rugged materials palette of tongue-and-groove ceilings, end- grain fir floors, and slate, project a cozy-yet-modern mountain feel, and the home’s crown jewel appropriately is the kitchen where the two foodie owners perfect their latest creations. In the end, the Parker Residence remodel successfully meets the client’s goal of retaining the good of the old while introducing the best of a new generation of design.
